When Elizabeth became Queen, there was but one question that everyone asked, "Who will the Queen marry?" It was assumed that one of the first things Elizabeth would do was select a husband to help her rule England, and even more importantly to provide her with an heir. Queen Elizabeth is the last of the Tudors, and it is believed that her main concern would be to provide a child to perpetuate the rule of her family. The future of England will be uncertain without an heir, and many fear that the rival claims of Henry VIII's distant relatives will plunge the country into a bitter civil war if Elizabeth should die without a legitimate child to succeed her. In this year of 1566, the Lord Dudley had returned to the Queen's favor after the rumors of him murdering his wife, so that he could marry the Queen, has died down. The mere rumor of marriage brought bitter resistance from the rest of the court. Led by the Queens closest male relative and most powerful man in England, the Duke of Norfolk. The resistance grows. Norfolk's failure to advance in office himself has always caused him to resent the rise to power of the upstart Lord Dudley. Purple ribbons denote Norfolk support and Dudley supporters are wearing yellow. Armed and angry supporters from both factions roam the corridors and streets. |
